Lube Types Explained (So You Stop Guessing)

Standing in front of a wall of lube bottles shouldn’t feel like a pop quiz. Here’s the short version of what actually matters.

Water-based

Safe with all toy materials and all barrier methods (condoms, dams). Easiest to clean up, but dries out faster — keep it nearby to reapply. The safest default if you’re not sure what to grab.

Silicone-based

Lasts much longer, great for water play. But it breaks down silicone toys over time — don’t pair the two. Safe with condoms.

Oil-based

Long-lasting and good for massage, but breaks down latex condoms and is harder to clean off fabric and toys. Skip this one if you’re using barrier protection.

Quick compatibility cheat sheet

  • Silicone toys → use water-based lube
  • Glass, steel, or ABS toys → any lube type works
  • Latex condoms → water- or silicone-based only, never oil

When in doubt, water-based is the safe, boring, reliable answer — and boring is fine here.
