Material Safety 101: What “Body-Safe” Actually Means

“Body-safe” gets slapped on packaging a lot, but it actually has a specific meaning — and knowing it will change how you shop.

The short version

Body-safe materials are non-porous, meaning they have no microscopic holes for bacteria to hide in. That’s it. Non-porous materials can be fully cleaned; porous ones never can be, no matter what the bottle of cleaner promises.

Safe materials

  • Medical-grade (platinum-cured) silicone
  • Borosilicate glass
  • Stainless steel
  • ABS plastic (hard, for casings and shells)

Materials to avoid

  • “Jelly” or “rubber” — porous, and often contains phthalates
  • Anything unlabeled — if a product won’t tell you what it’s made of, that’s the answer
  • PVC without clear body-safe certification

Rule of thumb: if you can’t find the material listed clearly on the product page, don’t buy it. Reputable brands are proud of what their products are made from.
